What is Reality?
WHAT IS REALITY?
In philosophy, reality is the state of things as they actually exist. Reality includes everything that is and ever has been, whether or not it is observable or comprehensible. Reality is not dependent upon anyone or anything for it's existence and is not altered by perception. Reality is not defined or altered by time and does not change. Reality simply is.
Today, we live in a culture enamored and captivated by a false reality. Millions of people tune in to watch reality shows that aren't real, spend countless hours building virtual friendships with real people that they don't really know and many choose to fabricate the moral, ethical and spiritual framework of society, based on nothing more than self-reflection and limited understanding. Our world is in a reality crisis. Many have turned from a true reality and are choosing to define reality as they see fit according to their own beliefs and desires, to fit into their agenda and motive. This is postmoderism at it's worst. So, what is Reality?
During the time between 1,900 and 3,400 years ago, over 40 men were used by God as writing instruments to construct 66 different books. Some of these men were rich and some were poor. Among them were kings, poets, prophets, musicians, philosophers, farmers, teachers, a priest, a statesman, a sheepherder, a tax collector, a physician, and a couple of fishermen. These men spoke and wrote in 3 different languages while living on 3 different continents. The shortest of these books is less than a page, but the longest is over 100 pages. They wrote in palaces and in prisons, in great cities and in the wilderness, in times of terrible war and in times of peace and prosperity. They wrote stories, poems, histories, letters, proverbs, and prophecies. They wrote about Reality. The books written by these men have been preserved by God for thousands of years, combined and tranlated into English to make up the English Bible. The Bible, being absolute Reality, inspired by God Himself, is the greatest love story ever told, as well as, the most dangerous rescue mission ever recorded.
The Bible answers every important question with concrete certainty. Who am I? Where did I come from? Why do I exist? Why do people die? What happens after we die? Where did creation come from? Is there a heaven and a hell? How do I go to heaven? Why is there so much pain in the world? How can I find meaning and purpose to my life? Does God exist?
Although most of the scientific community will argue the validity of the Bible, science has never proven any part of the Bible wrong or even slightly incorrect. This feat would be easy to accomplish considering the multitude of diverse and easily provable subjects discussed in the Bible, yet is found to be impossible by the greatest critic. Quite simply, the Bible is way ahead of science. For example, although Aristotle proved the earth to be round a few centuries before Christ, the book of Job (which was written 1,700 years earlier) also indicates a round earth. Isaiah 40:22 (written 2,700 years ago) says, "God sits above the circle of the earth...." Here, the prophet Isaiah was more than 4 centuries ahead of Aristotle. Who knew?....God did. Mankind didn't discover the hydrologic cycle, or water cycle, until the 1,700's, but Job 36:27-28 says, "For He draws up the drops of water, they distill His mist in rain, which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly." Here, God's word was 3,700 years ahead of science. Who knew?....God did. Until the 1,500's many believed that the earth sat on the back of a tortoise, but Job 26:7 says that, "God hangs the earth on nothing." Once again, God's word is way ahead of man's word. The book of Hebrews, written roughly 2,000 years ago reads, "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible." Here, a 2,000 year old "book" speaks concerning the molecular level. Who knew?....God did. Man didn't discover that our universe is expanding until the 1920's, but Isaiah 40:22 says, "God stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in." Who knew?....God did. Science books are continually revised in an attempt to remain current and up to date, but since these books were written none of them have been changed. They were each perfectly inspired by the creator of the universe. Therefore, century after century the Bible continues to prove itself to be the inerrant, Holy Spirit inspired, word of God, a love letter to mankind. The Bible is time tested and proven perfect.
So, what is Reality? Well, a writer of several of these 66 books, named Paul, wrote this in a letter to the church in Colossae roughly 2,000 years ago. "Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things and in Him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:15-17) What does this mean? Jesus is God, and has revealed Himself to us in human form. All things were created by Him, depend upon Him for their existence and were created for Him.
Another one of these writers, named John, wrote, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:1-3) Jesus, here identified as the Word, had no beginning in himself, but existed from all eternity. He was not created and had no beginning. Jesus is eternally God. Jesus is a separate, yet equal third of the triune Godhead we call the Trinity and everything in creation depends upon Him to exist.
Simply: Jesus is Reality.
As you read this, God sits on His throne as King of all creation. He is all powerful. He is all knowing. He is perfect. He is Holy and He is righteous. Although we were created without flaw, we have all chosen to rebel against God and sin against Him. Consequently, all of creation is under the curse of sin. Every man is inherently evil and has fallen short of His standard of perfection. Every man and woman deserves eternal damnation and eternal separation from God, but in His great love for us, while we were still sinners, God became a man (Jesus) and came to pay the price of atonement, through the shedding of His perfect, sinless blood for all of mankind. No one else claims to, has or could have ever done that. This is precisely the reason Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one will inherit eternal life, except through Him. John 3:16 teaches us that, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son Jesus, that whoever would believe in Him, He would give them eternal life."
Salvation is available to you right now by, turning from your sins and placing your trust in Jesus Christ. He has taken away the sins of His people, and given them His righteousness in return! It may seem to good to be true, but that's exactly why it's the Good News! God is good and the statistics are in. Everyone will die. Over 150,000 people die every day. When we die, everything of this world will be gone and we must ask ourselves a very important question. What was my life for? For what purpose did I live? Did I live for the things of this world?....pleasure, wealth, popularity, fame, accomplishment, status, power, etc. Did I devote myself to the temporary things of this world? And, if so, did it even really matter?
The answer is an obvious and sobering no. In Matthew 16:25-26, Jesus said, "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" You see, we were created to live for a purpose well beyond the 70 or 80 years we live here on earth, which, in truth, is an immeasurable speck in the scope of all eternity. We are intended to live for the pleasure and glory of our creator, the giver and sustainer of all life, and we have the amazing priveldge of investing into the eternal realm by surrendering to and serving Him right now!
My hope and prayer is that you will humble yourself, confess your sins to Jesus and give your heart to Him right now. I gaurantee, once you get to know Him, you'll never turn back. I leave you with a passage from the second chapter of the book of Philippians. "Therefore God has highly exalted Him (Jesus) and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Everyone will submit to and acknowledge Jesus as the supreme leader of the universe, either now or later. I pray that you will choose now.
With love, your friend, Ebo.
